Privacy policy

whami is a game about guessing where a short video was filmed. That means the app handles two genuinely sensitive things: video you record and precise locations. This page explains exactly what is collected, why, and who can see it. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
Who we are
whami is operated from the United States. For anything in this policy, contact support@whami.io.
What we collect

What we do not collect
- Your location when you are not actively recording a clip. The app has no background location access at all.
- Your contacts, calendar, photo library, call or message history.
- Payment details. There is nothing to buy.
- Anything from advertising or analytics trackers. There are none in the app.
- Your phone's logs. Error reports carry only the specific fields listed above — we do not collect the system log or take copies of anything else on your device.
Locations are the game
This is the part worth reading twice. When you post a clip, the precise location where you filmed it is revealed to any player who guesses on it. That is the point of the game, but it means:
- Do not film from your home, a friend's home, or anywhere you would not want strangers to be able to place you.
- The location is shown after someone guesses — it is never visible beforehand, and never appears in the browsing feed.
- Deleting a clip removes its location along with it.
Your guesses are shown with your profile picture, and are tappable. When anyone views the reveal for a clip — including the person who posted it — they see where each guess landed, marked with that player's picture. Tapping one opens that player's profile, the same as tapping their picture anywhere else in the app. So a guess links a recognisable picture, and a route to your profile, to a place on a map. People you have blocked never see your guesses, and you never see theirs.
Other people in your videos
Filming in public means filming other people. Please be considerate: do not record anyone who has asked you not to, do not film through windows or into private spaces, and do not post a clip whose whole point is a person who did not agree to be in it. If you appear in someone's clip and want it taken down, email support@whami.io and tell us which clip.
Who your information is shared with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. It reaches these companies only because they run parts of the service:
- Google — sign-in, and delivery of push notifications.
- DigitalOcean — the servers that store the data, located in the United States.
- OpenFreeMap — supplies map imagery. When the app shows a map, or when you open the whami.io home page (which has a map behind it), your device requests map tiles from them directly. That reveals your network address and roughly which part of the world is being shown. This page and the other legal pages load no map and no third-party content at all.
We will also disclose information if the law requires it, or where it is necessary to investigate abuse or protect someone's safety.
How long we keep things
- Your account and content: until you delete them.
- Reports you file: kept after review so repeat problems can be recognised.
- Server logs: kept only as long as they are useful for operating the service, and cleared out routinely.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app: tap your profile picture, then Delete account. If you no longer have the app installed, use the deletion request page.
Deleting your account permanently removes:
- your name, email, profile picture, username and the link to your Google account,
- every clip you posted, including its video file and its location,
- every guess you made, every like, and who you follow and block,
- your notifications and push notification tokens.
Comments you left on other people's clips are emptied of their content and shown as “[deleted]”. The empty placeholder stays so that replies other people wrote underneath do not vanish along with it.
Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. Signing in with the same Google account afterwards creates a brand new, empty account.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, or object to how it is used. Deletion is built into the app; for anything else, email support@whami.io and we will respond. We will not treat you differently for exercising these rights.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.
Children
whami is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email support@whami.io and we will remove it.
Security
Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted. Signing in issues a session that expires, and deleting your account invalidates it immediately. No service can promise perfect security, but we try not to hold data we do not need.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or who sees it, we will update the date at the top and let you know in the app.
